How to Motivate Yourself on Off Days

Today is one of those gloomy days where its cold and gray outside. The only thing missing is a good rainstorm and it would be a perfect day to take a nap. While it would be amazing to just do nothing, there are things I actually need to get done. Does that sound like you, too?

If you are in need of some extra motivation, keep reading these helpful tips.

Make a to do list the night before

I find that I feel motivated to get up early in the morning when I have a clear idea of what needs to get done and when. You can either make a list on your phone or write it down. I’m more of a planner person and I love writing my to do lists in my planner so that I can cross them off when I’m done.

Use peer pressure  to your advantage and make a goal public

Tell a friend or significant other your plans for the day. You’re more likely to follow through on what you set out to do if you told your friend or partner the things you had to get done that day. I find this especially helpful when it comes to going to workout. Let’s face it. I need all the motivation I can get in that department! I feel a lot more guilt if I skip the gym if I already told my boyfriend that I was going to go.

Promise yourself a reward

At the end of the day if you get a certain percentage of your to do list completed, reward yourself. I know this is technically bribery but if it helps you complete all the tasks on your to do list, then it’s worth it right? Besides, motivation is motivation.

Make two separate lists of things to do

When I have a lot to do, I make a list of all the things that need to be completed that day.  Then I write a second list of what can be put off until another day if needed. I find that  when I break down the list into smaller portions,  I am more motivated to finish as much as possible on both lists.

Take a Power Nap

If you really cannot make it through the day without a break, take a quick power nap. Make sure to set your alarm to go off after 30-40 minutes so that you can get up and keep going!

Just get up and go

I know this is kind of cop-out tip. Just hear me out. Most people can’t get the motivation to start something but once you’re up and moving, it is easier to complete the task. This is how I am with the gym (do you see a trend here?). If I can get over the hump of getting to the gym, I can get through the workout  just fine. You build things up in your head to be more difficult that it actually is.

Dress appropriately

Okay, ladies! I find that the more comfy I feel, the harder it is to be productive. If you put on your favorite sweatpants with the intention of going out, chances are that you’re going to feel blah all day long.  If you take the time to put on something a little nicer, it might elevate your mood.

Make a great playlist of upbeat music for doing chores

Sometime you just need a little music in your life to give you some extra motivation. Check out my Girl Boss Playlist to Keep You Motivated.
