Hello, friends! Whether you’re new to the oily game or you’ve been a believer for years, there’s no question how versatile essential oils are. They have been used for thousands of years for cooking, healing and aromatic purposes. I just wanted to take a minute to share with you why I love them!
I’ve been using essential oils for a few years now. I usually bought them either on Amazon or Whole Foods and I loved diffusing them especially before bed. It wasn’t until several months ago that I really started to delve into the world of essential oils and how they can be used for so many different things!
As I have mentioned before, I am a pediatric nurse by trade and I’m also going to school part-time to be a nurse practitioner. While I am a believer in Western medicine and the usage of pharmaceuticals to improve our health and state of living, I understand that there are holistic adjuncts that can be explored as well.
Through my time on the pediatric floor, I learned that several of my coworkers use more natural everyday products such as natural deodorant, household cleaners, cosmetics, and yes–essential oils. I’ve always known that clean living was a thing but I guess I never really paid much attention to it until I took my graduate level pharmacology class at Maryville University this semester. As I spent countless hours memorizing drugs and learning their uses, I couldn’t help but become more interested in aromatherapy as an adjunct to pharmaceutical therapy and the natural healing practices that have been used for centuries.
In addition to this, I started thinking more about how mental health is not being addressed as openly as it should. I have family members with depression and anxiety and because of the nature of our culture or our own close-minded viewpoints, they are reluctant to taking medications to treat these conditions. It makes me feel better knowing that there are other options out there. I’m not saying that one practice is any better than another. I’m just saying that everyone is entitled to do their own research and discover what works for them.
So while I am being trained in Western Medicine, I couldn’t help but feel drawn to Eastern medicine and how nature has many different gifts to help us with our wellness journey.
Embracing the unknown and learning all I can about healing practices that I don’t use on the daily will only make me a better nurse practitioner, bedside nurse, friend, and family member.
One of the things that I am working on is being more kind to my body and more aware of what I put into it or on it. While I don’t fully embrace the clean living style (because I still hate vegetables and still love fast food), I’ve been taking baby steps to a happier, healthier and more balanced me. Essential oils are a part of that journey.
As you can probably tell from my last few blog posts, I have done a lot of thinking and self-reflection in the last few months. I have thought long and hard about how I want to live my life.
I love how I can support my environment with natural products. Preventative health is always important and I like the idea that Mother Nature is on my side in all of this.
I’ve decided to start using higher quality essential oils from a company called Young Living to ensure that what I’m using for my health is as good as they can be! I’ll keep you posted with how I like them.
